Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City uses artificial intelligence in gastrointestinal screening

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) gastroenterology team, based in Abu Dhabi, one of the largest hospitals in the United Arab Emirates for severe and complex care and a joint venture partnership between Mayo Clinic and Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), has introduced an advanced AI system for gastrointestinal intestinal endoscopy that dramatically improves the detection of precancerous colon polyps.

This FDA and UAE approved system known as GI Genius is an AI solution designed to assist with colonoscopy procedures and will be available at SSMC’s Division of Gastroenterology, headed by Dr. Michael Wallace. . During his role as Professor of Medicine and Director of Procedural Innovation at the Mayo Clinic, USA, Dr Wallace used the technology for two years during his trial in Europe and was also the researcher principal of a randomized controlled study in the United States with the FDA.

While the technology is similar to augmented reality, it is led and operated by a doctor who drives the endoscope and removes polyps, using AI technology as an additional and augmented visual cue to identify precancerous polyps, including some are very difficult to see. A certain type of polyp, known as a flat polyp, is very subtle and easily missed, which is why an augmented AI system can offer substantial help in signaling their presence during colonoscopy procedures. Doctors driving the endoscope will view the procedure on an augmented video screen.

“This technology has also shown exceptional results in terms of efficiency,” continues Dr. Wallace. “The most important measure of the effectiveness of endoscopies is the extent to which the technology increases the rate of detection of adenomas, which denotes the rate at which we detect precancerous polyps in the colon. The more adenomas (polyps) you find and remove, the more you prevent colon cancer.

Typical medical examinations show these sites of precancerous growth in about 30-40% of individuals. AI technology increases this figure to around 50% to 55% of individuals, dramatically increasing the rate of detection of adenomas. This is considered a good benchmark, because for every 1% increase in the rate of adenoma detection, the risk of developing colon cancer is reduced by 3% and the risk of death from colon cancer is reduced by 5%. . With a 15% increase that translates to a 10% decrease in the detection of adenomas, this will lead to a 30% decrease in the risk of colorectal cancer and a 50% decrease in the risk of death from colon cancer.

“The scope and potential of AI is quite significant, with the potential to use these technologies for many applications. Although it is currently approved as an additional tool, I think the uses of AI at large can potentially be very substantial, and it is important for the world to note that we are using AI from a constructive and safe way, ”concludes Dr. Wallace.
