Collaboration of experts from the healthcare sector to focus on innovation in surgery

Experts from the healthcare industry come together to collaborate on the development of standard policies and procedures to ensure the safe and transparent introduction of innovation in surgery.

The AHSN network is working with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Bristol Biomedical Research Center (BRC), the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England to organize a series of events aimed at understand the challenges and how to overcome them when it comes to introducing innovation in surgery.

The events will bring together experts to design better ways to assess and integrate new surgical techniques and devices into the NHS. These events will be informed by a five-year research project led by Professor Jane Blazeby and supported by the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Center. Research has identified areas for improvement regarding the introduction of new and scalable surgical and invasive procedures, and has initiated research to examine the nature and extent of these problems.

The study showed the lack of a standard process and the need to develop policies tailored to the needs of surgical innovation, and echoed the findings of the Cumberlege 2020 report which underscored the need for change.

Professor Jane Blazeby said: “Many surgeons are brilliant innovators and innovation is key to improving healthcare. Our research has shown that we need to make critical policy improvements to the way we introduce new surgical techniques and invasive procedures to increase safety, consistency and transparency.

“It’s about enabling change to support surgical innovation. We bring together clinicians, academics and regulators to examine the issues and jointly develop solutions to improve the way new invasive procedures are introduced and evaluated. “

The first of a series of proposed events will take place on 3rd November 2021 to bring the sector together, present research findings and workshop actions regarding changes in policy directions.
